Friends of the Edward-Dean Museum |
The stained Norwegian pine paneling of the Pine Room was carved circa 1680 and is believed to be the early work of the master carver, Grinling Gibbons. The walls were designed and executed for the Earl of Essex for his Cassiobury Park home. Other features in this room include a late 18th c. Waterford chandelier, a uniquely large Persian rug, Sino-Tibetan bronzes, porcelains, period furniture, paintings and many beautiful decorative arts. Visit the Pine Room Gallery. |
Built as a recreation of Edward Eberle's own living room, the Blue Room has a particularly comfortable sense. Above the black Belgian marble fireplace is an anecestral portrait from the Ming Dynasty. The windows are framed with rich Scalamondre silk curtains and topped with gilded pelmets. Other features in this room include an early 19th c. Broadwood pianoforte, period furniture, and paintings. On the walls of the Picture Room, are watercolors by J.M.W. Turner, David Roberts, Thomas Rowlandson, Samuel Prout and Paul Sandby. In addition there are oils by Francesco Zuccarelli, George Lambert, and Pietro Liberi. Other features in this room include a large Persian prayer rug, an 18th c. The twelve scrolls that line the Oriental Room depict the Chinese artist's journey through the diamond mountains of Korea circa 1640. Other features in this room are a 17th c. Japanese screen of the "Ceremony of the Rice Festival," a pair of oriental Chippendale chairs, and Chinese robe. In the adjoining Alcove are an early 20th c. bronze statue of Icarus and marble busts. On the ground floor of the museum, the Library contains over 3,000 decorative arts books used by scholars, students, volunteers, Friends of the Edward-Dean Museum, and staff. Other features in this room and in the adjoining Alcove include leather Creche figures from Malta, wood-block prints, paintings, period furniture and decorative arts. The last room in the musuem, the Oak Room is lined with display cases containing fine china, ceramics and glass. Other features in this room include a late 17th c. William and Mary chest with oyster shell inlay, a unique 17th c. Madonna triptych, a collection of miniature paintings on ivory, period furniture, paintings and decorative arts. Surrounding the Edward-Dean Museum, the Gardens provide a picturesque setting of flowers, a rose garden, trees, fountains, statuary and a koi pond. Included on the grounds are a cultural arts building and a pavilion. Visit the Gardens Gallery. |
